Great Teacher Onizuka, aka GTO, came out in 1998 and is based on a manga and anime series with the same name. It is also the sequel to the manga Shonan Love Gang.
GTO is another school drama that is very much like Gokusen. Both teachers in those series have deliquent students who they need to set straight. Both teachers have some kind of gang related background. The main difference is that one’s male and one’s female. ^_^
